The Lela Initiative is a not-for-profit independent publishing house. We produce children’s fiction and adult non-fiction, using our profits, alongside donations, to support literacy projects within communities in Uganda.
Our vision is to bring joy, escapism, hope and empowerment to communities in Uganda through free access to books.
We work with local organisations to improve school libraries in rural areas and plant reading hubs in deprived communities.
We look to support the country’s economy by purchasing books from local bookshops and sourcing services within.
We also seek to encourage aspiring Ugandan writers through book clubs and writing competitions.
